WhatsApp is developing a feature that allows users to send messages across various messaging applications, focusing on maintaining end-to-end encryption for security.
This initiative aims to comply with the EU’s Digital Markets Act, which requires interoperability among major digital platforms. Users will have an opt-in choice for this feature, introducing a “third-party chats” section in their inbox for messages from other apps.
Success of this cross-app messaging depends on other platforms’ cooperation, with detailed plans expected soon.
According to The Verge, “The shift toward interoperability will first include text messages, images, voice messages, videos, and files sent from one person to another. In theory, this would allow users to chat with people on WhatsApp through third-party apps, like iMessage, Telegram, Google Messages, and Signal, and vice versa.”
Tech website, The Verge, broke the news.
More than 2 billion people worldwide use WhatsApp.
