Two leading US electric vehicle manufacturers, Rivian and Tesla, have entered a collaboration agreement that promises to accelerate EV adoption in the US. Rivian announced June 20, a partnership that will expand charging options for drivers of both brands.
Beginning Spring 2024, Rivian vehicles will have access to charge at Tesla Superchargers across the United States and Canada. In an announcement to customers, Rivian said it would offer a North America Charging Standard (NACS) adapter allowing drivers to connect their vehicles to Tesla’s charging ports.
Once the NACS adapter is ready for Rivian vehicles, the company will add available NACS charging sites to its digital ecosystem, including the Rivian app and in-vehicle navigation to help the drivers easily access them.
In 2025, Rivian will take the collaboration a notch higher and incorporate NACS charge ports as standard in its R1T and R1S vehicles.
The partnership will provide Rivian drivers access to over 12,000 Tesla Superchargers, one of the world’s most extensive fast-charging networks. Besides, the collaboration will allow Tesla drivers to access Rivian’s Adventure Network, a network of over 3,500 fast chargers at more than 600 sites.
“The agreement simplifies electric vehicle ownership by offering more ways to fast-charge Rivian vehicles and supports Rivian’s mission to decarbonize transportation,” Rivian said.
The collaboration between Rivian and Tesla is a significant step forward for the electric vehicle industry in the US. This agreement is also a win for consumers. It gives them more charging options and makes traveling long distances in an electric vehicle easier.
The collaboration is also a positive development for Tesla, as it will help to increase the utilization of its Supercharger network. In the past, Tesla charging stations were only limited to powering Teslas, but in November 2022, the giant EV company announced that it would open its charging stations to other models.
“In pursuit of our mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy, today we are opening our EV connector design to the world,” Tesla said in a blog post. “We invite charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to put the Tesla charging connector and charge port, now called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), on their equipment and vehicles.”
The collaboration will help address the EV charging station challenges companies in the US experience and take the fight to the Chinese, who have dominated the market.
