Club 1824 Closes After Decades of Nightlife
Nairobi’s popular nightclub 1824, known for its whisky barrel tables and vibrant nightlife, was shut down on Wednesday by authorities. The closure comes amidst an ongoing investigation by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) into the club’s owner, Wilson Nahashon Kanani, a City Hall staffer.
Kanani is accused of amassing Ksh.643 million in assets on a meager Ksh.55,000 salary. EACC alleges that Kanani, through his office, received bribes and kickbacks, leading to the accumulation of wealth and assets, including two high-end vehicles.
Court documents reveal that between January 2016 and October 2022, Kanani channeled Ksh.506 million through bank accounts held in his name and family members, despite his official monthly salary of Sh55,000.
The closure of 1824 is not unprecedented. In 2022, the club was raided by police for operating in a residential area and later shut down for violating Covid-19 regulations. However, its longstanding presence and reputation as a nightlife icon in Nairobi made it a popular destination for residents across the city.
Images circulating online show unidentified individuals removing furniture and other belongings from the club under the watchful eye of police officers. The whisky barrel tables, synonymous with 1824’s ambiance, are seen scattered outside the premises.
The EACC’s investigation into Kanani’s alleged corruption is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether 1824 will reopen its doors once again.
