A cloud of mystery hangs over the disappearance of a police-issued AK-47 rifle, after the officer entrusted with the weapon was arrested.
Police Constable Benson Otenda, stationed at Karatu Police Station, reportedly failed to secure the firearm properly after finishing his shift on Monday night. Instead of returning the AK-47, serial number 5524595, to the armoury, Otenda took it with him to his living quarters.
According to official reports, Otenda placed the loaded rifle beside his bed before taking a nap. Upon waking up later that morning, he discovered the weapon missing. The report details that a search party was immediately deployed to locate the missing rifle and ammunition.
“The seriousness of the situation is evident by the swift response,” a source within the department revealed. “A high-level security team, including the County Police Commander, the Crime Investigations Officer, and the Officer Commanding Station from Gatundu South, all joined the search efforts.”
While the search continues, Otenda remains in custody as investigations proceed. The incident has raised concerns about protocol and firearm safety within the department.
