A Nelore cow from Brazil has smashed the world record for the most expensive cow ever sold at auction, fetching a staggering $4 million (Sh517 million) according to Guinness World Records.
The snow-white cow, named Viatina-19 FIV Mara Movéis, weighs a hefty 1,100 kilograms and has been living the life of a pampered celebrity. Security cameras, an armed guard, and a veterinarian are all on hand to ensure her safety.
“She is the closest thing to perfection we’ve seen so far,” said veterinarian Lorrany Martins. “She has all the characteristics that breeders are looking for in a complete cow.”
Viatina-19’s high price tag reflects her value in Brazil’s booming meat industry. Not only does she put on muscle quickly, but she is also highly fertile and can pass these desirable traits on to her offspring.
Martins explained that breeders use in-vitro fertilization to create embryos from champion animals like Viatina-19. These embryos are then implanted in surrogate cows. Viatina-19’s own egg cells are so sought after that they can fetch a cool $250,000 (approximately Sh32 million) each.
While muscle mass and fertility are key factors, bidders also consider other qualities when purchasing breeding stock, such as posture, strong hooves, a calm temperament, maternal instincts, and overall beauty.
