Kenya Declares Public Holiday for Nationwide Tree Planting
In a move to combat climate change, the Kenyan government on Monday, November 6 declared Monday, November 13, a public holiday for nationwide tree planting. President William Ruto will lead the national tree planting exercise at a designated venue, while Cabinet Secretaries and Governors will preside over tree planting in all 47 counties.
The initiative, which is part of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program-Towards the Growing of Fifteen (15) billion trees, aims to reduce greenhouse emissions and restore forest cover.
The holiday was declared by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki, who said in a gazette notice that it is “intended to raise awareness of the importance of trees and to encourage all Kenyans to participate in the national tree planting campaign.”
The campaign is part of Kenya’s Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Program, which aims to restore the country’s forests and rangelands. Trees play a vital role in the environment, providing food and shelter for wildlife, helping to regulate the climate, and preventing soil erosion.
On Tree Planting Day, Kenyans will be encouraged to plant trees at their homes, schools, workplaces, and in other public spaces. The government will also be providing seedlings and planting materials to support the initiative.
However, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu Tuesday announced that the ongoing KCSE exams will continue as scheduled on Monday, despite the day being declared a public holiday. He urged all members of the Multi-Agency Examinations Administration Group to report to duty on time to ensure that the exams are conducted smoothly.
DCI Hunts for Wells Fargo Employees Who Fled With Ksh.94 Million Quickmart Cash
Monday morning, two Wells Fargo employees, Daniel Mungai Mugetha and Anthony Nduiki Waigumo, hatched a daring heist, disappearing with a staggering Ksh.94,918,750 collected from Quickmart supermarket last weekend.
The duo snuck their mission car out of the company’s Nairobi offices at 6 am Monday, November 6, shortly after the money box was loaded, leaving behind the unsuspecting police escort team.
Oblivious to the audacious theft, the armed escort team waited patiently for the truck to be flagged off, unaware that the suspects were already miles away.
The Wells Fargo truck that was carrying the money was destined for a bank on Kenyatta Avenue in Nairobi, but it was abandoned at a dumpsite in South C residential area, Nairobi. The two vanished into thin air, leaving behind a trail of disbelief and devastation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since launched a manhunt to apprehend the suspects, whose faces have been revealed to the public.
The heist, which has sent shockwaves through the corporate world, has raised serious questions about Wells Fargo’s security protocols and the integrity of its employees.
Wednesday, Quickmart sought to array fears of the public and stakeholders in the business following the Monday incident. Through a statement dated 8 Novermber, 2023, Quickmart said: “Quickmart Supermarket, as a reputable homegrown company, insures its finances against such incidents. We would like to ensure all our relevant relations that this occurrence will not disrupt our daily operations. Investigative authorities are actively working on resolving this issue, as we remain dedicated to serving our customers and partners with the integrity and dedication that defines our brand.”
