Tinubu’s Win in Nigerian Presidential Election Upheld
A Nigerian tribunal has dismissed challenges by opposition candidates to the victory of Bola Tinubu in the February presidential election.
The five-member tribunal rejected petitions by Atiku Abubakar of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, who came second and third respectively.
The judges said that the petitioners had not presented any credible evidence to support their claims of irregularities.
Judge Haruna Tsammani, who read the lead judgment, said Obi’s petition was “unmeritorious” and had “not led any credible evidence sufficient enough” to back claims of irregularities.
He said Atiku’s allegations of vote fraud were “so lame” and dismissed his argument that Tinubu was not qualified to run for president.
The tribunal’s ruling is a major setback for the opposition, which had hoped to overturn Tinubu’s victory.
The tribunal’s ruling is final and cannot be appealed.
African Parks to Free 2,000 Rhinos from Captivity
In a major move to save the endangered southern white rhino, African Parks Monday announced plans to free 2,000 of the animals from the world’s largest rhino farm in South Africa.
The non-profit conservation organization purchased the 7,800-hectare (19,274-acre) Platinum Rhino farm in the North West province, which borders Botswana. The farm currently houses 2,000 southern white rhinos, the largest population of the species in captivity.
“African Parks had no intention of being the owner of a captive rhino breeding operation with 2,000 rhinos. However, we fully recognise the moral imperative of finding a solution for these animals so that they can once again play their integral role in fully functioning ecosystems,” said Peter Fearnhead, CEO of African Parks.
“The scale of this undertaking is simply enormous, and therefore daunting. However, it is equally one of the most exciting and globally strategic conservation opportunities. We will be working with multiple governments, funding partners and conservation organisations, who are committed to making this rewilding vision a reality,” he added.
The rewilding project will take more than 10 years to complete and will be one of the largest ever undertaken in Africa. The rhinos will be transported to safe and well-managed protected areas across the continent, where they will be monitored by African Parks rangers.
Chadian Protesters Storm French Military Base Over Fatal Shooting
A Chadian soldier was shot dead by a French military nurse at a French base in Faya-Largeau, northern Chad, on Tuesday. The incident sparked protests by local residents, who tried to storm the base.
The Chadian soldier had reportedly gone to the base seeking medical treatment. According to Chadian and French officials, the soldier attacked the nurse with a scalpel, and the nurse shot him in self-defense.
The Chadian and French militaries have launched a joint investigation into the incident. The Chadian government has said that it will hold those responsible accountable.
The protests in Faya-Largeau are the latest in a series of demonstrations against the presence of French troops in Chad. The French military has been deployed in Chad since 2013 to help fight against terrorism in the region.
