The Kenyan National Sevens Rugby team, Shujaa, roared back to the prestigious HSBC Rugby Sevens Series with a dominant 33-15 victory over Germany in the promotion-relegation playoff at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Despite Germany drawing first blood, Shujaa captain Vincent Onyala wasted no time in responding, crossing the try line almost immediately. Co-captain Tony Omondi’s successful conversion put Kenya ahead 7-5 early on.
A temporary setback came when Christian Ojwang was sin-binned, allowing Germany to capitalize with a try of their own. However, Ojwang made amends upon his return, scoring Kenya’s second try and putting them back in the lead (12-10) with Omondi adding the extras.
John Okoth, who had been a standout performer throughout the tournament, further extended Shujaa’s lead with another touchdown, again converted by Omondi. Kenya never looked back, ultimately securing a convincing 33-15 victory and a triumphant return to the World Sevens Series for the 2025 season.
This significant win capped a successful weekend for Shujaa. They had earlier dominated Chile 36-7 in their final pool game on Saturday. This came after a narrow 10-5 loss to hosts Spain and a hard-fought 19-12 victory over Samoa in their opening fixtures on Friday.
