South Africa’s Transport Minister Robbed at Gunpoint on Highway
South Africa’s Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga was robbed at gunpoint on Monday while traveling on a highway south of Johannesburg. Her vehicle had stopped to change a burst tyre when she and her bodyguards were approached by masked attackers.
One of the attackers pointed a gun at Chikunga’s head and ordered her to come out of the car. The robbers demanded money, but Chikunga explained that she did not have any cash on her. They then searched the vehicle and stole laptops, a phone, and the bodyguards’ weapons.
Chikunga told a parliamentary committee on Tuesday that the experience was “very traumatising.” She said that she feared for her life during the robbery.
The robbery of a government minister traveling with armed bodyguards is very unusual in South Africa, which has long faced high crime levels. The police have confirmed that the robbery took place and have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators.
Julius Malema Blasts Kenyan President William Ruto for Failing to Deliver on Promises
South African firebrand Julius Malema took a swipe at Kenyan President William Ruto on Thursday, accusing him of failing to deliver on his campaign promises and backtracking on his commitment to uniting African leaders in abandoning the use of the dollar.
Malema, who was in Kenya to attend the launch of the Pan African Institute at Lukenya University, said he could not locate President Ruto these days because the things he was saying and doing were two different things.
“I don’t know if President Ruto means it because he said so many things,” Malema told the audience. “And the things he said during the election and the things he is doing now are two different things.”
Malema singled out President Ruto’s decision to warmly welcome King Charles III and Queen Camilla during their recent visit to Kenya, which he said was a lack of respect for the Kenyan people, who had endured significant losses and suffering during the colonial era while striving for their independence.
“Those who killed our people in the Mau Mau rebellion cannot be saluted by the same army of the children of those who were killed during the rebellion,” Malema declared.
He also criticized President Ruto for abandoning his commitment to promote the use of the Pan-African Payments and Settlement System (PAPSS) to facilitate trade between African nations in their respective local currencies.
Malema’s remarks came on the same day President Ruto presented his inaugural State of the Nation address to a joint session of Parliament, in which he outlined his priorities for the year ahead. His criticism of Ruto is likely to resonate with many Kenyans, who are increasingly frustrated with the President’s performance in office. Ruto’s approval ratings have plummeted since he took office in August 2022, and he is facing growing criticism for his handling of the economy and his perceived authoritarian tendencies.
A South Korean Man Falls Victim to a Deadly Robot
In a tragic turn of events, a 40-year-old South Korean national was crushed to death by an industrial robot that mistook him for a box of vegetables.
The man, a robotics company employee, was inspecting the robot’s sensor at a local factory when the machine malfunctioned and grabbed him instead of a box of bell peppers. The robot then shoved him onto a conveyor belt, crushing his face and chest.
The man was rushed to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. Local police have launched an investigation to determine whether the robotic arm had any technical defects or safety issues.
