Parties within the Azimio La Umoja coalition have called for the expulsion of the ODM Party from the alliance following Raila Odinga’s decision to collaborate with President William Ruto’s government. The call for ODM’s removal is spearheaded by three parties—PNU, Jubilee, and DAP-K—who have expressed concern over the future of the coalition.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, who serves as the Azimio chair, has reportedly convened a meeting to discuss the alliance’s trajectory and consider strategies that would enhance its ability to effectively oversee and challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration.
During a church service in Kirinyaga on Sunday, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka emphasized that while it is a democratic right for members to choose their alignment, he believes President Ruto is leading an unconstitutional government, particularly in the wake of recent Gen Z protests. Kalonzo criticized the broad-based government for being built on the sacrifices of young people who lost their lives demanding better governance.
Jubilee Party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni also criticized ODM, accusing the party of hypocrisy and violating the principles of the 2010 constitution. Kioni, a former Ndaragua MP, further condemned leaders who continue to use retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s name for their own gain, arguing that Ruto’s government is using opposition figures to maintain its grip on power and oppress Kenyans.
DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa announced that the Azimio National Executive Council (NEC) will meet this week to inform Kenyans of significant changes within the coalition. Wamalwa expressed concern that Kenyans are being coerced into supporting the Kenya Kwanza government following ODM’s decision to align with Ruto’s administration.
The church service, attended by other leaders including Githunguri MP Gathoni wa Muchomba and former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, highlighted growing tensions within the Azimio coalition. These tensions have been exacerbated by Raila Odinga’s move to nominate key allies, such as Hassan Joho, John Mbadi, Wycliffe Oparanya, and Opiyo Wandayi, for cabinet positions in Ruto’s government.
