A chilling wave of violence in Mexico’s southern state of Guerrero struck new heights Wednesday, December 10, 2024, as gunmen brazenly assassinated a prominent judge outside a courthouse in Acapulco. The victim, Judge Edmundo Román Pinzón, was fatally shot while driving out of the courthouse parking lot in broad daylight.
Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots before discovering the judge slumped in his vehicle, struck by at least four bullets. Authorities quickly cordoned off the area and began collecting evidence, including CCTV footage, in a bid to identify the perpetrators. Despite intensified efforts by security forces in the resort town, no arrests had been made by late Wednesday night.
Judge Pinzón was a senior legal figure in Guerrero, having once presided over the state’s highest court. Most recently, he oversaw cases involving murder, kidnappings, and car thefts—some of the most dangerous and contentious criminal proceedings in the region. His work placed him at the epicenter of Guerrero’s struggle against organized crime, where judicial officers often face threats from violent cartels and criminal networks.
The assassination shocked the judiciary and prompted calls for swift action. Guerrero’s governor described the murder as “a heinous crime that demands immediate justice.” However, no motive has yet been established, leaving many to speculate whether Judge Pinzón’s high-profile cases may have made him a target.
This latest killing underscores the escalating violence in Guerrero, a state plagued by cartel wars and lawlessness. Just last month, 11 bodies, including those of two children, were discovered inside an abandoned vehicle in Chilpancingo, roughly 100 kilometers north of Acapulco. Such incidents have become grimly routine in a region where rival gangs vie for control of lucrative drug routes.
Acapulco, once celebrated as a glamorous beach resort, has been transformed into a battleground. Cartels have turned parts of the city into no-go zones, leaving scenes of unimaginable brutality, including mutilated bodies dumped on public beaches. Residents live in fear, and the justice system is stretched thin trying to prosecute crimes while protecting its own.
