The Kenyan Ministry of Health Wednesday July 31 confirmed the first case of Mpox, previously known as Monkeypox, in the country. The infected individual was intercepted at the Taita Taveta one-stop border point while traveling from Uganda to Rwanda.
Public Health and Professional Standards Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni said the single case is sufficient to declare an outbreak. She warned that the disease, which can cause a painful rash, fever, and swollen lymph nodes, spreads through close contact with an infected person or respiratory droplets.
“While Mpox is endemic in some African countries, the high volume of people moving between Kenya and its neighbors poses a significant risk of the disease spreading,” said PS Muthoni.
She urged Kenyans to maintain good hygiene, avoid close contact with people showing symptoms, and seek medical attention immediately if they suspect infection.
The Ministry of Health has activated surveillance systems and is working with county governments to prevent the disease from spreading further.
