President William Ruto, in his capacity as the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, made significant appointments and promotions within the Kenyan military on Tuesday, May 2nd.
Lieutenant General Charles Muriu Kahariri has been promoted to the rank of General and has been appointed as the new Chief of the Defence Forces (CDF). Additionally, Major General John Mugaravai Omenda has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and appointed as the Vice Chief of the Defence Forces. Notably, Lieutenant General John Mugaravai Omenda previously served as the Kenya Air Force Commander.
These appointments follow the unfortunate demise of General Francis Ogolla and nine other military officers in a helicopter crash two weeks prior.
President Ruto also made several other postings and appointments within the military hierarchy. Major General Fatuma Gaiti Ahmed has been posted to the Kenya Air Force as Commander, while Major General Paul Owuor Otieno has been posted to the Kenya Navy as Commander.
Furthermore, acting upon the recommendations of the Defence Council chaired by Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, President Ruto approved additional promotions and postings:
- Major General Thomas Njoroge Ng’ang’a has been posted to the National Defence University and appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Administration and Finance.
- Brigadier Peter Nyamu Githinji has been promoted to Major General and appointed Senior Directing Staff, Air at the National Defence College.
- Brigadier Jariani Kampare Gula has been promoted to Major General and appointed Managing Director of Kenya Meat Commission.
- Brigadier George Okumu has been promoted to Major General and appointed Managing Director of Kenya Ordnance Factories Corporation and Food Processing Factory.
- Brigadier Samuel Kosgel Kipkorir has been appointed Deputy Commander of the Kenya Air Force.
It’s worth noting that the position of CDF rotates among generals within the three military formations: the Kenya Army, the Kenya Air Force, and the Kenya Navy. General Ogolla was from the Kenya Air Force, while General Kahariri hails from the Kenya Navy.
