Salim Swaleh, the Director of Press at the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, was Sunday, June 23rd apprehended in connection with an intricate fraud scheme. This scheme allegedly unfolded within the office of former Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi, prompting a swift response from law enforcement.
According to a press release issued by Peter Warutere, Secretary of Strategic Communications at Mudavadi’s office, Swaleh and several others stand accused of impersonation, fraud, and abuse of office. Their arrests followed a meticulous operation set in motion after receiving a crucial tip-off.
“The arrests followed a tipoff that alerted OPCS-MFDA security, who then mounted intense surveillance at the OPCS-MFDA Railways Office to disrupt the reported nefarious acts of impersonation and abuse of the facility by the fraudsters,” read the statement.
Investigations revealed a sophisticated modus operandi where imposters, masquerading as VIP guests or government officials, gained unauthorized access to the Railways Building on various occasions. Their purported victims were mostly unsuspecting foreigners, lured under false pretenses to meet with high-ranking officials in exchange for illicit favors and bribes.
Further scrutiny into the fraudulent network uncovered complicit government insiders who facilitated these illicit activities. Among the implicated officials was Mudavadi’s Director of Press, who was apprehended after investigators discovered counterfeit door switch-nametags within his office.
“Apparently, government officers arrested had perfected ‘renting’ office space to criminals by either vacating their offices for the fraudsters’ use, or deceptively misrepresenting themselves,” the statement from Mudavadi’s office elucidated. “This deception also meant switching legitimate name tags with fake ones on office doors to advance the scams.”
Authorities also reported that upon their capture, the suspects attempted to bribe their way out of the situation, underscoring the brazen nature of their activities.
“Upon being smoked out in one of the OPCS-MFDA Railway offices where the confidence tricksters had settled in wait for their victims on Saturday, the group had the audacity of attempting to bribe their way out,” the statement revealed.
