Affrican Climate Summit In Nairobi: Resolutions & Pledges
President William called for global collaboration in addressing climate change at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi.
The Kenyan president said that countries cannot address climate change and human development “from a disconnected or in an adversarial manner” to make substantial change. Speaking in the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Ruto stressed that global warming cannot be mitigated by individual countries taking insular, solitary policies.
Ruto also said that prosperity cannot be pursued in a zero-sum, exclusive fashion, as this would lead to injustice and inequity. He argued that these are the drivers of inequality, poverty, conflict, and activities that threaten biodiversity and encourage pollution.
The president noted that the Africa Climate Summit is both a preamble to this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) and a global pre-COP28 convention. He said that this is an opportunity for Africa to lead the world in a new direction towards a future that holds immense promise for both Africa and the entire world.
Ruto urged African states to tackle climate change with the urgency it deserves. He said that African nations have the permission of their ancestors to innovate and find ways to address climate change quickly and effectively.
On Monday, the Summit’s first day, President Ruto said his administration will give Kenyan counties a total grant of Kshs. 7.387 billion in climate resilience. The grant, under the umbrella program dubbed the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA)will disburse the money to 44 counties in Kenya, which have met the qualifications.
The grants will be used to assist counties in developing and implementing tailored climate resilience strategies in response to risks identified by communities in sectors such as agriculture, water, and natural resource management.
Ruto said the FLLoCA Program will be managed by the National Treasury and Planning in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry and the Council of Governors.
The program will be funded by the national and county governments as well as the World Bank and the Governments of Denmark, Germany, Netherlands and Sweden.
“The disbursement of the grants represents a significant milestone in the journey towards a climate-resilient Kenya. By equipping communities and governments with the necessary tools, resources, and knowledge, we can ensure that communities are better prepared for the challenges brought by climate change,” Anne Waiguru, the Governor of Kirinyaga and Chairperson of the Council of Governors, said.
The Africa Climate Summit is themed “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World.” The convention was organized by the African Union Commission in collaboration with the Kenyan government to give African nations the chance to develop specific plans, design corresponding resources and investments, push for changes in the global financial system, share knowledge and workable solutions, and update Africa’s development and climate vision.
On Tuesday, the United Arab Emirates announced $4.5 billion in clean energy investments in Africa. The three-day summit has attracted heads of state, government and industry, including leaders from Mozambique and Tanzania, as well as United Nations head Antonio Guterres, EU chief Ursula von der Leyen and US climate envoy John Kerry.
