Armenia announced on Friday that it would recognize a Palestinian state, leading Israel to summon the Armenian ambassador for a “severe reprimand.” This move follows similar recognitions by Spain, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and Antigua and Barbuda, amid growing international support for the Palestinian cause due to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry provided no additional details about the reprimand. Armenia’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement supporting a “two-state solution” to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza as a pressing international issue.
On Thursday, humanitarian aid began unloading again at a U.S.-built pier in Gaza after being temporarily halted due to rough seas. Aid groups criticized the sea delivery plan, arguing it distracted from the need to open more productive land border crossings. Palestinians are facing severe shortages of food, medicine, and basic goods due to the ongoing conflict, which has largely cut off supplies to Gaza.
Israel’s promise to secure a new aid route into southern Gaza has been undermined by lawlessness, according to the U.N. and international aid organizations. The lack of security has made the route unusable, with armed groups regularly intercepting and looting aid convoys.
Israel’s war against Hamas, which began after the militant group’s attack on October 7, has drawn increasing international criticism. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 37,400 people in Gaza, according to the territory’s health ministry. The ongoing violence has also disrupted aid distribution, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Meanwhile, in Gaza City, an Israeli airstrike on a municipal garage killed five people, including four municipal workers and one passer-by. The strike further damaged Gaza’s already beleaguered infrastructure, compounding the challenges faced by civilians.
Israel’s military campaign aims to dismantle Hamas, following the group’s surprise attack that killed approximately 1,200 Israelis and led to the abduction of about 250 people. Despite Israel’s efforts to establish safe aid corridors, the escalating conflict and breakdown in order have severely hampered humanitarian relief efforts.
