Over 300 experts and government ministers from across Africa have convened in the Ethiopian capital for the Fifth Ordinary Session of the Specialized Technical Committee on Social Development, Labour, and Employment (STC-SDLE-5). The gathering aims to develop and endorse strategies to enhance social development, labor practices, and ethical employment across the continent.
Under the theme “Social Agenda 2063: Promoting Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) Ecosystems,” the conference, which began on Monday, will see experts deliberate on critical issues until July 31st, followed by ministerial discussions from August 1st to 2nd.
At the heart of the meeting is the promotion of the Social Solidarity Economy (SSE), a model that prioritizes collective well-being over individual profit. SSE emphasizes cooperation, mutual aid, and democratic governance, with a focus on social services, poverty reduction, job creation, and environmental protection.
“We must translate our discussions into concrete actions,” said Mahmout Moussa (Chad), the incoming Chair of the STC. “The people we represent demand results, not empty promises.”
Participants will review progress on strategies adopted during the previous session, including those addressing child marriage, female genital mutilation, and online child exploitation. They will also develop frameworks to protect migrant workers, establish labor market information systems, and create guidelines for bilateral labor agreements.
The conference is aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, which emphasizes human rights, poverty eradication, and social cohesion as pillars of sustainable development.
