5 Marines Killed in California Helicopter Crash
Five U.S. Marines aboard a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter were tragically killed when their aircraft crashed during a training flight in Southern California on Tuesday, the Marine Corps confirmed Thursday. The helicopter was en route from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar when it went down.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the loss of five outstanding Marines,” said Major General Michael Borgschulte, commander of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing. “Our thoughts and prayers are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Efforts to recover the remains of the fallen Marines are underway, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing. President Joe Biden offered his condolences to the families of the victims, praising their service and sacrifice.
“As a nation, we owe an immense debt of gratitude to these brave Marines who dedicated their lives to defending our freedom,” President Biden said in a statement. “Their selfless service and ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten.”
This tragedy marks the latest in a series of deadly incidents involving U.S. military aircraft in recent months. In November, eight sailors perished when a V-22 Osprey crashed off the coast of Japan. Earlier that month, five service members died in a helicopter crash during a training exercise in the Mediterranean.
