Tina Turner renounced her United States citizenship and moved to Switzerland in 2013.
One of the primary motivations behind Tina’s move was her relationship with her long-time partner, Erwin Bach, a German music executive. The couple had been together since the 1980s and eventually married in Switzerland in 2013.
In a 2018 interview with CBS’s Gayle King, Tina also said she never felt welcome in the US.
“When I lived in the States, they didn’t give me the freedom that the other countries gave me,” Tina said to King.
But despite her change in citizenship, Tina’s impact and legacy as an American musical icon remained intact, and she continued to be celebrated and admired by fans worldwide.
