Joyce Aoko, a 22-year-old Kenyan woman, who was attacked by unknown assailants in Albania in August last year, has died.
News about her death reached the diaspora community on Sunday, with messages attributed to her mother Ruth Abongo that her daughter had succumbed to her injuries.
Joy, as she was popularly known, defied great odds, living longer than doctors in Albania had anticipated and inspiring Kenyans from all over the world to raise funds to enable her to gain specialized treatment abroad.
But the money raised was not enough for specialized treatment in Europe. And in a move that earned praise from diasporans, the Kenyan government stepped in and flew her back home, where she was transported to Kenyatta University Hospital.
Details of what caused her death have not been confirmed, but a source close to the family said she had breathing difficulties and she died Monday morning at Kenyatta University Hospital.
We’ll keep updating this story as details emerge.
