Minnesota Swears In First Somali-American Mayor Elected by Voters
St. Louis Park, Minnesota, has ushered in a new era of leadership with the swearing-in of its 27-year-old mayor, Nadia Mohamed. This historic moment marks Mohamed as the first Somali-American to be elected mayor in the United States.
Mohamed’s family fled war in Somalia and sought refuge in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. When she was 10, her family moved to the US, settling in St. Louis Park. Mohamed grew up immersed in the city’s vibrant culture and developed a deep understanding of its needs.
Her passion for community engagement led her to the city council in 2019, where she became the youngest and first Muslim member at just 23 years old.
In November 2023, Mohamed shattered another glass ceiling by winning the mayoral election with a resounding 58% of the vote. While acknowledging the significance of her historic first, Mohamed emphasizes that her identity is just one facet of her story. “I am proud of everything that I am, but I don’t want that to be the only story,” she told reporters. “I don’t want that to [be] where people stop their conversation.”
Mohamed’s vision for St. Louis Park extends beyond labels and accolades. She has pledged to tackle critical issues like public safety and affordable housing, ensuring that all residents feel secure and have the opportunity to thrive. Her commitment to inclusivity and progress resonates with the diverse tapestry of St. Louis Park, promising a brighter future for the city.
