In an extraordinary turn of events, a woman acquitted of murder charges delivered a healthy baby girl moments after the verdict at the Kithimani Law Court in Machakos County.
Virginia Mbinya Maingi was arrested in late March following the suspicious death of her 19-month-old son. While heavily pregnant, she awaited trial in detention at Matuu police station.
On Monday, April 16th, Principal Magistrate Paul Matanda ruled in Ms. Maingi’s favor after a medical examination revealed the cause of her son’s death to be starvation. The emotional rollercoaster continued shortly after the acquittal, when Ms. Maingi went into labor within the courthouse. Court staff scrambled to ensure her privacy and called for medical assistance.
Thankfully, nurses from the nearby Kithimani dispensary arrived promptly and safely delivered a baby girl. After receiving medical care, both Ms. Maingi and her newborn were transported back to her rural home under police escort from Matuu station.
