US Sanctions Al-Shabaab Financiers in Kenya
The United States cracked down on a network funding the al-Shabaab terror group, imposing sanctions on two Kenya-based individuals and a web of companies across several countries.
The Treasury Department accused Faysal Yusuf Dini of using his business, Haleel Group, to funnel money to al-Shabaab. Dini reportedly works with Mohamed Jumale Ali Awale to manage these funds, including laundering them through investments and companies like Crown Bus Services, which allegedly supports al-Shabaab logistics.
The sanctions also target Dubai-based Haleel Commodities, a key financier for the terror group. US officials say Haleel Group, along with its branches in Kenya, Uganda, Cyprus, and Somalia, generate and launder funds for al-Shabaab.
Individuals sanctioned include Hassan Abdirahman Mahamed, a Somali citizen based in Finland, and Farhan Hussein Hayder who manages Haleel Group’s branches across several countries.
The sanctions freeze any assets belonging to the designated individuals and companies under US control.
PSC Denies Hiring Jacque Maribe
The Public Service Commission (PSC) Thursday refuted claims by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria that former Citizen TV anchor Jacque Maribe was appointed Head of Communications in his ministry.
Last weekend, CS Kuria informed the Nation news website of Ms. Maribe’s supposed appointment. This sparked public debate on social media, with concerns raised about the adherence to proper hiring procedures.
However, the PSC released a statement on Thursday denying Kuria’s announcement. PSC Chairperson Anthony Muchiri clarified that Ms. Maribe had not been hired, nor had the commission received any request for her employment.
“We wish to state categorically that the position has not been filled,” Muchiri said in the social media statement. “Should a vacancy arise, it will be filled through a competitive process.”
This news comes just a month after Ms. Maribe was acquitted of the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani. The high-profile case had captivated Kenyans for six years.
Ms. Maribe and her former fiancé Joseph Irungu, alias “Jowie,” were both charged with the 2018 murder of Ms. Kimani, who was found with a fatal throat wound in her Nairobi apartment.
While Ms. Maribe was cleared of involvement, Mr. Irungu was found guilty and sentenced to death on Wednesday.
