The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party has abruptly terminated the tenure of Cleophas Malala as its Secretary General. The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Friday morning.
In a swift move to fill the vacancy, the NEC appointed Vice Chairperson Hassan Omar as the interim Secretary General.
The party’s statement attributed the decision to recent “events” within the party and the broader political landscape. The NEC also announced plans to implement “a raft of governing and administrative measures” to streamline the party’s operations and foster inclusivity.
The development comes amid internal strife within UDA, with Malala facing mounting pressure over his leadership. Earlier this week, a rival faction had laid claim to the Secretary General position, leading to chaotic scenes at the party headquarters.
Malala had sought a court injunction to block Friday’s NEC meeting, arguing that it should be held next week. However, the party proceeded with the meeting despite the legal challenge.
The party has also announced that the ongoing grassroots elections will continue as planned, with necessary adjustments to be made by the National Elections Board.
