Tessie Mudavadi, the wife to Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi is getting a rough welcome into her new office.
Kenyans on Twitter are reacting negatively after Mudavadi elevated his wife Tessie to a newly-formed Office of The Spouse of The Prime Cabinet Secretary.
Mudavadi attempted to make a case for creating the office that some consider unconstitutional.
“I believe the days when the spouses of political leaders only appear in ceremonies and say or do nothing are gone. Their contribution in our family set-up should be mirrored to the larger society, for they learn so much from our daily leadership engagements,” Mudavadi tweeted.
The responses have been swift and unfavorable.
“Nonsense,” Cherotich Tanui tweeted in response to Mudavadi’s tweet with his photos congratulating his wife.
“You have no shame trying to defend the creation of a non-constitutional office. A person can’t just hold an office coz they’re married to you. Shame on you,” a Twitter user named Bolton responded.
One supporter told Mudavadi not to bother explaining himself and continue with the appointment.
“Don’t explain giving your wife a senseless position so she can eat that public money for the time you’re in government. Secure the bag, man. Your dad did it for you. Now it’s your turn to do it for your sons and daughters. We understand, do not explain a lot,” Big Homie Kikosi tweeted.
Others drew on Charlene Ruto, President William Ruto’s controversy last year when she claimed to head the Office of The First Daughter.
“Coming soon.
The Office of the Spouse to The Deputy President.
The Office of the Spouse to The Speaker of The National Assembly.
The Office of the Spouse to The Majority Leader.
The Office of the Spouse to The Speaker of The Senate.
The Office of the Spouse to The First Son Sad,” Brenda Mimo tweeted, apparently unaware Deputy President’s Wife Dorothy Gachagua already had an office.
“There is an office of the spouse to the deputy president,” Danrarua tweeted, correcting Brenda Mimo.
“Alaa, already,” Brenda Mimo hilariously responded.
It’s unclear whether the creation of the Prime CS Spouse office is constitutional. Still, Kenyans appear to think it’s an unnecessary gimmick office designed to placate Mudavadi’s wife and waste taxpayers’ funds.
But Mudavadi is not backing down.
“Forming the Office of the Spouse to The Prime Cabinet Secretary is a step in the right direction,” Mudavadi argued. “Tessie has stepped forward with Ushiriki Wema Initiative to scale down the huge gap that lies within the differently abled people in society.”
According to a banner at the launch, Tessie will have her hands full. The office is committed to promoting the well-being of Kenyan citizens by focusing on improving the lives of children and families, advancing causes that bring dignity to persons living with disabilities and the elderly, enhancing health with the emphasis on maternal and child healthcare and protection of the environment and improved sanitation.
