President William Ruto Monday mandated that National Youth Service (NYS) recruits undergo compulsory basic firearms training as part of their paramilitary preparation, ensuring they are equipped to defend the nation if necessary. This directive was issued during the 88th National Youth Service Recruits Pass-Out Parade held in Gilgil on Monday.
Ruto said that his administration remains committed to integrating NYS graduates into the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and securing other employment opportunities for them.
Among the recruits, 447 former NYS officers were enlisted into the Kenya Wildlife Service, representing 56% of the 790 officers recruited. This, according to Ruto, aligns with his directive that all security agencies prioritize hiring NYS graduates due to their proven discipline, skills, and paramilitary training.
The President further instructed the ministries of Interior and Defence to ensure that the NYS paramilitary training program includes a basic firearms course. This addition, he said, would prepare the recruits to effectively protect the country whenever the need arises.
