A major security breach occurred early Tuesday morning at Nairobi’s Gigiri Police Station when the prime suspect in the gruesome Kware murders, Collins Jumaisi, escaped along with 12 other detainees. The escape sparked outrage and led to the immediate interdiction of eight police officers, including the Gigiri Sub-county commander and OCS.
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli described the incident as an “inside job” and vowed to apprehend the escapees. The DCI chief, Amin Mohamed, and Deputy Inspector General Eliud Langat joined Masengeli in a security operation at the station to assess how the suspects had managed to break out.
Jumaisi, who had previously confessed to killing at least 42 women and dumping their bodies in the Kware area, was awaiting a plea hearing in court. The 13 suspects, including Jumaisi, escaped by cutting the wire mesh at the basking bay of their cell.
The escape has raised serious questions about security protocols at the police station. An investigation is underway to determine how the suspects were able to plan and execute their escape. Authorities are reviewing CCTV footage and conducting interviews with police officers and staff to gather more information.
Meanwhile, a massive manhunt is underway to recapture Jumaisi and the other escapees. The acting IG has assured the public that the police are committed to bringing them to justice.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Thursday appealec to the public to help in re-arresting the wanted murder suspect. A significant cash reward has been offered to anyone who can provide credible information leading to his capture.
The DCI issued a wanted person notice on Thursday, urging citizens to report any sightings or information about Mr. Khalusha to the nearest police station or through a confidential police hotline.
