Ruto to Expand Kericho Town
Kericho residents are beaming with joy after President William Ruto promised to expand the town, which has become congested in recent years.
Speaking during the Mashujaa Day celebrations at the newly renamed Wilson Kiprugut Stadium, Ruto said that a 1,000-acre piece of land had been identified for the expansion project.
“I had told you before that Kericho town does not have the land for extension. Kericho is so congested. Kericho is a small town because there is no expansion programme,” Ruto said.
“I want to announce that I will come back next month because the 1,000-acre piece of land which had issues, all those issues have now been sorted by the government and now we will get a 1,000-acre piece of land for expansion, development and planning of Kericho town.”
Ruto added that those who would be affected by the project would be considered under the government housing programme.
The expansion of Kericho town is a welcome development for residents, who have been struggling to cope with the growing population and traffic congestion. The town is a major center for tea production and other agricultural activities, and it is also a popular tourist destination.
The expansion project is expected to create new jobs and boost the town’s economy. It will also help to improve the quality of life for residents by providing them with more space to live, work and play.
Four Die in Stampede
Despite the good news about the expansion of Kericho, the Mashujaa Day celebrations were marred by a stampede that killed four women and injured 13 others. The stampede occurred at 3am on Friday, hours before the stadium gates were opened for the public ahead of the national celebrations led by President William Ruto.
The stampede was caused by a tea vendor who accidentally spilled hot tea on an open fire. The members of the public panicked, mistaking the smoke from the fire for teargas.
The injured were rushed to the Kericho County Referral Hospital, while the dead were moved to the hospital’s morgue awaiting identification and postmortem.
Angolan President’s Absence Sparks Curiosity
The absence of Angolan President João Lourenço from the Mashujaa Day celebrations sparked curiosity among Kenyans. Lourenço had been anticipated as the chief guest at the event, but he was notably absent.
President Ruto later clarified that Lourenço was in the country and that his official state visit would commence on Saturday. However, he did not provide any further explanation for Lourenço’s absence from the Mashujaa Day celebrations.
Lourenço’s absence has led to speculation about the reasons for his non-appearance. Some have suggested that he may have been unable to attend due to unforeseen circumstances, while others have speculated that there may have been diplomatic tensions between Kenya and Angola.
