Kenyan distance running star Faith Kipyegon cemented her dominance in the 1500m race, breaking her own world record at the Paris Diamond League on Sunday. Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic champion in the event, clocked a staggering 3:49.04 at Stade Charlety, shaving 0.07 seconds off her previous record set in Florence last year.
The 30-year-old runner paced the field with the help of two pacemakers, leaving Australian Jessica Hull in her wake. Hull finished second with an impressive 3:50.83, marking the fifth-fastest time ever recorded in the women’s 1500m.
Kipyegon’s feat sparked national pride in Kenya. Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen lauded her achievement, praising her “incredible run” and phenomenal time. He highlighted how Kipyegon flies the Kenyan flag high and inspires the nation with her talent and determination. Similar sentiments were echoed by opposition leader Raila Odinga and former Energy Minister Charles Keter, who commended her dedication and continuous inspiration for aspiring athletes.
Beyond the 1500m, Kipyegon also holds the world record in the women’s mile, achieved at the 2023 Monaco Diamond League. She shattered the long-standing record with a time of 4:07.64. Previously, she held the world record for the 5,000m distance as well.
As the reigning double Olympic champion in the 1500m, Kipyegon sets her sights on a historic three-peat at the upcoming Paris Olympics.
