The Kenyan Marine Commando Unit (KMCU) Tuesday July 30 underwent specialized training delivered by the United Kingdom’s Royal Marines. The training, which took place during a visit by the British Royal Navy frigate HMS Lancaster, focused on enhancing the KMCU’s capabilities in counter-piracy, counter-terrorism, and anti-smuggling operations.
The joint training included practical exercises in visit, board, search, and seizure tactics, essential skills for maritime security operations. The KMCU’s formation is a result of a five-year partnership between the UK and Kenya aimed at building a self-sufficient Kenyan Navy.
British High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan, hailed the training as a significant step forward for Kenyan maritime security. “This collaboration demonstrates the tangible benefits of our security partnership and will undoubtedly bolster Kenya’s military capacity,” he said.
Commander Chris Sharp, Commanding Officer of HMS Lancaster, pointed out the importance of the exercise in strengthening regional stability. “Training alongside the KMCU is a privilege and contributes to our shared goal of a secure maritime environment,” he added.
During its visit, HMS Lancaster, equipped with advanced weaponry and sensors, conducted various maritime security operations, including drug interdictions. The frigate’s presence in Mombasa underscored the UK’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s maritime security efforts.
