The family of Kenyan climber Cheruiyot Kirui has announced that his body will not be retrieved from Mount Everest, following his death while attempting a summit climb without supplemental oxygen.
In a statement released Wednesday, the family expressed their difficult decision after “extensive consultations and careful consideration of all factors.” Retrieving Kirui’s remains from the high altitude crevasse he fell into, some 48 meters below the peak, was deemed too risky for a rescue team.
“Cheruiyot had a profound love for the mountains, and they loved him in return,” the statement reads. “We find solace in knowing he rests in his happy place.”
The family also offered condolences to the family of Nawang Sherpa, Kirui’s guide who remains missing.
Memorial services are planned for Nairobi and Kirui’s hometown of Chepterit, with details forthcoming.
Kirui’s body was reportedly discovered near the summit. He was attempting a rare feat of climbing Everest without bottled oxygen. His Sherpa companion, Nawang Sherpa, has not been located.
