Kenya and Uganda Resolve Oil Import Dispute
Kenya has agreed to allow Uganda’s state oil company, UNOC, to import petroleum products through the port of Mombasa. This ends a long-standing dispute that had led Uganda to explore alternative routes, including ports in Tanzania.
Previously, Ugandan oil retailers relied on Kenyan affiliated firms to import their fuel. UNOC will now receive a license and utilize Kenya’s pipeline infrastructure, the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC), ensuring Kenya still benefits from the deal.
Landlocked Uganda depends heavily on imports, with around 90% of its petroleum products traditionally coming through Kenya. This amounted to $1.6 billion in 2022, primarily sourced from the Gulf region.
“You will see UNOC (Uganda National Oil Company) getting a licence and then we will see how to work together,” Kenya’s Energy Minister Davis Chirchir was quoted as saying in the Business Daily newspaper Thursday.
Uganda’s decision to explore alternative options stemmed from concerns about supply vulnerabilities. The government felt Ugandan retailers were prioritized lower than Kenyan firms during disruptions, impacting Ugandan fuel prices.
Following a meeting between Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni last month, both countries committed to resolving the import issue. This agreement marks a positive step towards stronger regional cooperation.
AFC Leopards Mark 60th Anniversary in Style
AFC Leopards capped off their 60th-anniversary celebrations in style, defeating Spanish visitors AE Ramassa 4-3 at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday. President William Ruto, Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja were among the dignitaries present to witness the historic win.
The celebratory mood almost took a backseat when Ramassa drew first blood. However, AFC Leopards, fielding a mix of current stars and club legends, showcased their resilience. Michael Khamati equalized before halftime, paving the way for a thrilling second half.
Charles Okwemba, a legendary name for Ingwe fans, netted the winning goal, securing a well-deserved victory. This capped off a successful two-day event that also saw AFC Leopards play to 1-1 draws against local rivals Gor Mahia and Shabana FC.
Brian Yakhama and Kevin Kimani found the net against Gor Mahia and Shabana respectively, with both opponents managing equalizers. AFC Leopards ladies also drew 1-1 with Kisii Ladies, an affiliate team of Shabana.
The 12-day-long celebrations were an opportunity for Ingwe to reminisce on their illustrious past. The club boasts 13 Kenyan Premier League titles, 10 Kenyan Cup wins, and 5 CECAFA Club Championships, solidifying their place as Kenyan football royalty.
“We are happy to mark this important occasion with all our partners and the fantastic fans who have supported us throughout the years,” said a club statement.
Leopards fans now hope that this renewed spirit translates into on-field success. The club hasn’t clinched a Premier League title since 1998, with arch-rivals Gor Mahia dominating the scene.
