Azimio coalition leaders announced on Tuesday that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka would assume the role of the coalition’s new leader, as Raila Odinga transitions to a potential continental leadership position. Raila, who has been a central figure in the coalition, is now vying for the position of African Union Commission chairperson.
The decision was confirmed shortly after Raila’s official candidacy launch at State House, Nairobi. Speaking on behalf of the coalition, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa expressed confidence in Kalonzo’s ability to lead Azimio. Wamalwa highlighted that the coalition remains strong and united, emphasizing that Kalonzo, as the next in line within the leadership hierarchy, is well-prepared to take over the reins.
“Kalonzo Musyoka, who has served as a Vice President and is an experienced diplomat, is fully capable of leading Azimio,” Wamalwa stated. He noted that the coalition members had reached a consensus in support of Kalonzo’s leadership and that they have great faith in his ability to guide the coalition forward.
Wamalwa further assured that Azimio would not experience any leadership vacuum with Raila’s departure. Instead, the coalition is expected to grow even stronger under Kalonzo’s guidance. As Raila prepares to move to Addis Ababa, the coalition will embark on a new phase under Kalonzo’s leadership, beginning with a town hall meeting at Ufungamano House on Wednesday.
During this meeting, Azimio plans to engage with Generation Z, the broader Kenyan youth, the private sector, and civil society on various critical issues, including the defense of the constitution and educational reforms. Wamalwa reiterated the coalition’s commitment to charting a path forward as a “government in waiting,” with Kalonzo Musyoka at the helm.
