In a move to address the recent incidents of public disruption during political gatherings, Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof. Kithure Kindiki Monday issued a directive for the arrest and prosecution of individuals involved in heckling at such events.
Prof. Kindiki, speaking during his visit to Kericho County, made it clear that those found guilty of such disruptions should face legal consequences. “I have directed security agencies to swiftly deal with any form of disorder at political gatherings,” Prof. Kindiki said.
He further said there is a need for a thorough approach in addressing this issue. “The security team is tasked with stamping out incidents of disorderly conduct in political meetings, to conclude investigations, and to apprehend the organisers, financiers, and perpetrators of hooliganism in the County, irrespective of their political or social standing.”
This directive comes in the wake of incidents involving heckling during President William Ruto’s trip to Kericho County, an event meant for developmental discussions. The disruptions, notably aimed at Kericho Governor Eric Mutai, prompted President Ruto to call for civility and political tolerance among the attendees.
President Ruto’s urged the electorate to “exercise their power at the ballot when 2027 comes, and vote out leaders whom they believe have not delivered,” thereby advocating for democratic expressions of dissent rather than disruptive actions.
In addition, Kindiki’s itinerary in Kericho included meetings with the Kericho County Security and Intelligence Committee, headed by County Commissioner Gabriel Kitiyo. These discussions focused on the political unrest and national efforts to combat the illegal manufacture, distribution, sale, and consumption of illicit liquor, narcotic drugs, and psychotropic substances.
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, also condemned the heckling of the president in political gatherings. In a speech delivered in Kapsabet, Gachagua condemned the act of heckling at political events. He admonished Rift Valley leaders for their ongoing disputes, which detract from their responsibilities to the citizens.
“It is shameful and disdainful for leaders to make President Ruto a laughing stock as they publicly fight for supremacy in the region in the presence of the Head of State,” Gachagua said, calling for unity and a focus on service to the populace.
