In a surprising turn of events, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Monday issued an apology to Mama Ngina Kenyatta, the country’s revered former First Lady, for the political turbulence and personal attacks she faced during the 2022 General Elections.
Speaking from his residence in Karen on Monday, Gachagua made a public plea for forgiveness, aiming to mend fences after a period marked by intense political rivalry and personal invectives.
“In the heat of the last general election, we unfortunately involved Mama Ngina Kenyatta in politics in a manner that was not fitting. She is, to all of us, a mother figure. On behalf of myself and my political colleagues, I extend our sincerest apologies for any distress or inconvenience we may have caused her. Moving forward, I shall ensure that no one under my watch will demean her or any individual from our region,” Gachagua said.
Gachagua also extended an olive branch to former President Uhuru Kenyatta, with whom he had previously clashed. “The former President, Uhuru Kenyatta, is part of us. Despite our disagreements in the last two years of his presidency, we’ve shared many more years of collaboration. He has my prayers and best wishes in his retirement.”
Moreover, the Deputy President called for unity and cooperation among Kenya’s leadership, particularly within the Mount Kenya Region. “Our strength lies in our unity. It is crucial for our generation and those that follow to foster an environment of cohesive thinking and mutual respect. This is the foundation upon which we will build a prosperous nation,” Gachagua said.
This apology comes after a period where Gachagua openly criticized the Kenyatta family, even challenging Mama Ngina to return a portion of the family’s land to the descendants of the Mau Mau fighters.
Gachagua further reiterated his commitment to the welfare of the Mau Mau descendants. “The legacy of the Mau Mau and their struggle for our freedom is something we all must honor. It is never too late to right the wrongs of the past, and I am dedicated to facilitating support for their descendants, including addressing historical land issues,” he stated, hinting at ongoing efforts to resolve longstanding grievances.
