Comedian Eric Omondi got arrested on Wednesday for distributing maize flour to his supporters at City Stadium in Nairobi.
It’s unclear why the police arrested him and which laws he’d violated by distributing maize flour. There’s also no evidence Omondi had more than one packet of flour he was carrying.
Omondi had called on Kenyans to join him for a march from Uhuru Park to State House on March 7th to protest the high cost of living.
The comedian-turned-activist promised to give each person a packet of unga and asked them to bring their resumes, rent and school fee arrears, shopping lists for basic necessities, and electricity bills to present to the State House during the protest.
Police officers intercepted Omondi as he tried to distribute bags of flour to his supporters at City Stadium.
The arrest comes a week after he was taken into custody in Nairobi’s CBD for protesting against the high cost of living. Omondi and more than 20 muscular, shirtless men blocked Parliament Road, demanding an audience with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.
He and 16 others were arraigned in court and released on a bond of Sh20,000 or cash bail of Sh20,000. They denied one count of participating in unlawful assembly before Chief Magistrate Lucas Onyina.
