Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made startling claims on Monday evening, stating that an ex-National Intelligence Service (NIS) official he had hired was trailed and shot by hired assassins. The allegations were made during an interview with Kikuyu vernacular stations, where Gachagua detailed the incident.
According to Gachagua, the NIS officer had been dismissed from his position within the National Intelligence Service, and Gachagua had subsequently employed him to assist in combating illicit brews. The Deputy President alleged that individuals intent on intimidating him targeted the officer.
“In an attempt to intimidate me, this officer was leaving his home in Kileleshwa when a person on a motorbike shot at him. The bullet narrowly missed his head and struck his shoulder. He spent a week in a Nairobi hospital where the bullet was removed,” Gachagua recounted.
Despite the severity of the attack, Gachagua noted that the assassin has not been apprehended. He went on to accuse certain state entities, particularly the NIS and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), of being used to intimidate him.
In the same interview, Gachagua claimed that his phone calls, as well as those of his close associates, were being intercepted. “Every person I call, our conversations are tapped and recorded. They then interrogate these individuals about what they want from me, despite my position as the Deputy President,” he asserted.
These accusations are not the first time Gachagua has criticized the NIS. He has previously accused NIS Director Noordin Haji of providing misleading information to President William Ruto, especially during the nationwide protests against the controversial Finance Bill 2024. Gachagua called for Haji’s resignation, alleging that the NIS is being mismanaged and that crucial officials were dismissed, leaving the service ineffective.
