Businessman Jimi Wanjigi was released on a personal bond of Ksh10 million on Tuesday after being arrested and detained at Kamukunji Police Station on Monday. Wanjigi appeared in court on Tuesday, where he was ordered to surrender his passport pending a ruling scheduled for September 12 on whether he will enter a plea.
The arrest came amid allegations of unlicenced firearms found in Wanjigi’s home. Police had claimed that the businessman would be prosecuted on Tuesday, August 20, but the case was adjourned.
Wanjigi’s lawyers argued that the arrest was illegal, citing a court order that had previously barred his detention. They also accused the police of malicious intent and contempt of court for revoking Wanjigi’s firearm license, which had been reinstated by the High Court.
The lawyers further contended that the charges against Wanjigi were flawed, as the police had violated court orders by arresting him. They also alleged that Wanjigi’s second accused had been subjected to physical abuse by police while in custody.
The court ordered Wanjigi and the second suspect to appear in court on September 12 to determine whether the charges against them will be dismissed.
