Busia Senator Andrew Okiya Omtatah Okoiti launched a Presidential Exploratory Committee last Saturday, marking a significant step towards challenging incumbent President William Ruto in the upcoming 2027 General Elections.
The formation of the committee was officially announced through a gazette notice dated November 22, adhering to Articles 129 and 138 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya. The notice declared that Senator Omtatah, elected by the people of Busia County, had established the committee to meticulously assess his viability as a presidential candidate.
Senator Omtatah, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics known for his activism, said that the decision followed extensive consultations with trusted advisors. “We are at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and the call to serve has never been more urgent,” he expressed on social media platform X.
The newly formed 10-member committee is entrusted with evaluating various aspects of Omtatah’s potential presidential bid. Mary Kathomi Riungu was appointed to oversee the coordination of the committee’s activities, to ensure that all tasks are executed efficiently and outputs are delivered on time. Assisting her is Charles Ole Kabaiku, who will also serve as the Diaspora Coordinator, bridging connections with Kenyan communities abroad.
Key roles within the committee include David Bwakali as the political and grassroots strategist, responsible for analyzing political trends and electoral dynamics. Victor Kipng’etich is the designated legal adviser, while Hanifa Adan will handle public relations and media strategies. Jude Ogulla will lead the analytics team, conducting opinion polls and surveys to gauge public sentiment. Additionally, Purity Ndambuki and Emmanuel Baraka were appointed as Joint Secretaries to manage administrative duties.
Kevin Migwe Kimwatu took the role of spokesperson, tasked with communicating the committee’s progress and Omtatah’s vision to the public. Eng Julius Okara was named Patron, providing overarching guidance and support to the committee’s initiatives.
The committee is set to operate for a maximum of 18 months from its establishment, during which it will analyze national, regional, and demographic political trends, as well as public opinions on key issues. One of its primary objectives is to develop an initial campaign strategy, which includes drafting a high-level roadmap outlining potential alliances, timelines, and necessary resources. Furthermore, the committee will identify and recruit key members for the campaign team, including advisors, strategists, and operational staff.
“The road ahead requires careful consideration and alignment with the hopes and aspirations of Kenyans. This exploratory phase is essential to ensure our vision for the future is both realistic and inspiring,” Omtatah said.
