A man who had been on the run for weeks over the gruesome murder of British businessman Campbell Scott Friday, took his own life while hiding in a friend’s house in Nairobi’s Dandora estate.
Samuel Musembi Kamitu, whom police had identified as a prime suspect in the case, was discovered unconscious on Tuesday evening, with foam coming from his mouth and a deep stab wound on his neck. His friend, who had offered him temporary shelter, told investigators that Musembi had arrived at his house seeking a place to rest. There was nothing unusual about his behavior when the host left for work in the morning. However, upon returning later that evening, he found the door locked from the inside.
Sensing something was wrong, the host forced his way into the house, only to find Musembi unresponsive. He was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital, but doctors were unable to save him. Initial findings suggest Musembi first attempted to poison himself. When that failed, he resorted to stabbing his neck.
Musembi had been linked to the chilling murder of Scott, a British investor who had arrived in Kenya for a business conference. Police believe he was part of a gang that lured Scott into a fake business meeting before abducting and killing him on February 17. His body was later found dumped in Makongo Forest, Makueni County, inside a sack filled with pineapples. Investigators suspect Musembi was the driver of the vehicle that transported the body from Nairobi’s Pipeline estate to the remote forest location.
Authorities have already arrested two other suspects—Alex Mutua Kithuka and Albunus Mutinda Nzioki—who are reportedly assisting with investigations. However, two more fugitives, Bernard Mbunga Mbusu and Alphonse Munyao Kilewa, remain at large. Mbusu, in particular, is no stranger to law enforcement. He has a history of criminal activities dating back to 2018 when he was arrested for blackmail and extortion.
Scott’s killers allegedly used his credit cards across Nairobi, Voi, and Mombasa after his disappearance, raising suspicions that the motive behind his murder may have included financial fraud. Investigators are still piecing together the final hours leading up to his death and the broader criminal network that may have been involved.
