The National Assembly voted on Thursday to establish a select committee tasked with investigating allegations of misconduct against Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture, Mithika Linturi. This move marked a significant development in the ongoing impeachment process against the CS.
The motion to form the committee passed with a vote of 149 in favor, 36 against, and 3 abstentions. This surpassed the required threshold of one-third of the House’s total membership (349), which translates to 116 votes.
The 11-member committee will comprise representatives from both the ruling Kenya Kwanza coalition (6 members), the opposition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition (4 members), and the Jubilee Party (1 member). Speaker of the National Assembly, Moses Wetangula, directed parliamentary groups to nominate members for the committee while considering regional and gender representation.
Following the nomination process, the House will vote on the proposed committee. Members will have the option to approve the entire list or request changes.
Once fully established, the committee has a 10-day timeframe to complete its investigation and report its findings back to the House. This tight deadline may necessitate early meetings for the committee members, especially considering the upcoming month-long recess for the National Assembly beginning Friday, May 3rd, 2024.
This development comes amidst accusations against CS Linturi surrounding the recent substandard fertilizer scandal. The select committee’s investigation will determine the validity of these accusations and potentially pave the way for further impeachment proceedings.
