17 Killed in Super Metro Accident
Tragedy struck on Monday morning as 17 passengers perished in a horrific head-on collision between a Super Metro bus and a lorry at Othoo area in Nyando sub-county, along the Kisumu-Nairobi Highway.
The pre-dawn crash, which occurred at approximately 2:30 am, also left over 50 passengers nursing serious injuries at Ahero Sub-county Hospital and the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital (JOOTRH).
Nyanza Regional Traffic Enforcement Officer Allan Mwangi confirmed the incident, revealing that the Nairobi-bound bus attempted to overtake another vehicle when it collided head-on with the oncoming lorry.
Eleven passengers met their tragic end instantly, while six others succumbed to their injuries while receiving medical attention.
Both the mangled bus and the lorry were towed to Ahero police station for further investigation.
Super Metro Company Limited, owner of the ill-fated bus, expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased. CEO Nelson Nduki stated, “We are saddened by this unfortunate incident. Our team is already on the ground assisting those hospitalized. We are still awaiting the full details of the accident from the police investigation.”
The cause of the accident remains unclear, as both drivers and conductors perished in the impact. Police investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the crash.
Car Theft Syndicate Busted in Machakos
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in Machakos County Thursday successfully apprehended six individuals suspected of operating a car theft syndicate targeting Prados and Isuzu Dmax vehicles.
Led by DCIO Nzioka Singi, the sting operation exposed the modus operandi of the gang: posing as wedding clients, they would rent high-end vehicles in Nairobi, claiming to transport the bride. However, upon reaching a secluded location in Machakos, they would blindfold the driver, disable the car tracker, and steal the vehicle, often transporting them across borders.
“In collaboration with Interpol, we have already recovered two stolen vehicles from Tanzania, including a Toyota Prado with a foreign registration plate,” confirmed Singi.
Four of the suspects have been charged with robbery with violence, accused of stealing vehicles with registration numbers KDH 908T and KDL 030Y on December 2nd, 2023. Two others are currently detained in Machakos prison, awaiting trial. All six will face charges jointly.
DCIO Singi urged caution for car rental businesses, highlighting the increasing trend of similar thefts originating from Nairobi and targeting Machakos. He advised heightened vigilance and encouraged reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.
