At least 14 people were killed in a tragic road accident early Friday morning along Kenya’s Nakuru-Eldoret Highway, a route infamous for deadly crashes. The collision occurred around 3 a.m. when a speeding trailer carrying coffee seeds lost control and plowed into a passenger shuttle traveling from Kitale to Nairobi.
Authorities confirmed that all 12 people aboard the shuttle, including the driver, died on the spot. The driver of the trailer and his assistant also perished in the crash. According to police, preliminary investigations suggest the trailer suffered brake failure, leading to the fatal collision.
“The impact was catastrophic. The trailer dragged the shuttle several meters before coming to a halt, leaving the victims trapped inside,” said police spokesperson Michael Muchiri. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but there were no survivors. The bodies were later taken to a local mortuary for further examination.
The accident occurred at Migaa, a well-known black spot notorious for frequent and often fatal crashes. Transport authorities have repeatedly warned motorists to be cautious when navigating this stretch of the highway.
This latest tragedy adds to Kenya’s worsening road safety crisis. According to government statistics, the country recorded 4,282 road deaths between January and November 2024—an increase from 3,901 fatalities during the same period in 2023. The number of reported accidents also rose sharply, with experts citing reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and weak enforcement of traffic regulations as key contributing factors.
