Pope Francis, who has been receiving treatment for pneumonia and bronchitis for over three weeks, is showing a “good response” to treatment, according to the Vatican.
“The clinical condition of the Holy Father in recent days has remained stable and, consequently, indicates a good response to the treatment,” the Vatican stated.
“There is therefore a gradual, slight improvement,” it added.
The 88-year-old prayed on Saturday morning in the chapel of the papal suite at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is being treated.
Pope Francis has not appeared in public since his hospital admission on February 14, marking his longest absence from public view since becoming pope 12 years ago.
He was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties. He was initially treated for bronchitis before being diagnosed with pneumonia in both lungs.
He is particularly vulnerable to pneumonia, which can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, due to a history of pleurisy—an inflammation of the lungs—that led to a partial lung removal in his youth.
Doctors believe his recovery may take time due to his age and medical history.
