Plane Crash in Canada Claims 6
A small commuter plane carrying workers to a mine in Canada’s icy Northwest Territories crashed shortly after takeoff on Tuesday, leaving six people dead and one survivor. The Australian mining giant confirmed the tragedy, stating that the plane “carrying a number of our people” had crashed “resulting in fatalities.”
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Trenton, Ontario, lost contact with the Jetstream twin turboprop airliner just minutes after its 8:50 am departure from Fort Smith, located 320 kilometers southwest of Yellowknife. Canadian Rangers on snowmobiles located the wreckage, while search and rescue teams parachuted in to assess the scene.
Northwestern Air, the flight’s operator, confirmed the crash occurred just 1.1 kilometers from the runway’s end. All flights from Fort Smith have been grounded until further notice.
Canada’s Transportation Safety Board has deployed a team to investigate the cause of the accident. Rio Tinto CEO Jakob Stausholm expressed the company’s profound condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims.
“As a company, we are absolutely devastated by this news and offer our full support to our people and the community who are grieving today,” he said.
