Reggae Icon Peter Morgan Dies at 46
Peter Anthony Morgan, the lead singer of the renowned reggae band Morgan Heritage, has died at the age of 46. The news was confirmed by his family on Sunday, who requested privacy and expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of love and support.
Morgan, affectionately known as “Peetah,” was not only a talented musician but also the son of the legendary Jamaican reggae singer Denroy Morgan. He, along with his four siblings – Una Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan, Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan, and Roy “Gramps” Morgan – co-founded Morgan Heritage in 1994.
The band rose to international prominence, achieving a significant milestone in 2016 when they won the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album for their project “Strictly Roots.”
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness took to social media to express his grief, describing Morgan’s passing as a “colossal loss” for both his home country and the reggae music scene globally.
One of Morgan’s brothers, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, embarked on a unique endeavor to introduce reggae to Nashville, Tennessee. In a 2018 interview with The Associated Press, Peetah noted the connection between reggae and country music, stating, “If you follow reggae music and country music, it’s a lot of storytelling. In reggae we tell the story of people suffering.”
