Ugandan opposition leader and former pop star Bobi Wine was injured Tuesday during a confrontation with a police officer, his leg reportedly wounded in the altercation.
The incident occurred as the 42-year-old politician, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, was on his way to meet his lawyers in Bulindo, a town about 20 kilometers north of Kampala.
Najja Ssenyonjo, a close associate of Bobi Wine, revealed that the opposition leader was believed to have been shot and was receiving treatment at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala. “We only heard bullet sounds in the scuffle, so it’s up to the doctors to confirm, but as of now, it’s believed to be a bullet,” Ssenyonjo said.
The first announcement came from Bobi Wine’s official X account, where a post read: “@HEBobiwine has been shot in the leg by police in Bulindo.” Soon after, footage shared by journalist Solomon Serwanjja circulated on social media, showing the injured politician being helped from a building with visible blood streaming from his left shin.
According to a police statement, officers at the scene reported that Bobi Wine had stumbled while getting into his vehicle. The police promised a thorough investigation to clarify the facts surrounding the incident. However, they also provided additional details, stating that Bobi Wine had attended an event in Bulindo and later led a procession that disrupted traffic in the town.
The police stated that despite being advised against proceeding, Bobi Wine insisted on moving forward with the procession, which prompted intervention from law enforcement. “During the ensuing altercation, it is alleged that he sustained injuries,” the police statement read.
Bobi Wine, who has been a vocal critic of President Yoweri Museveni, first entered the political arena in 2017 when he was elected to parliament. He later ran against Museveni in the 2021 presidential election, a campaign marked by heavy state repression. Since then, Wine has become a symbol of resistance among Uganda’s youth and has faced numerous arrests and physical confrontations with authorities.
