A devastating dam collapse in war-torn Sudan earlier this week left at least 60 people dead and many more missing, following days of heavy rainfall. The Arbat dam, a crucial source of drinking water for the coastal city of Port Sudan, burst due to the relentless downpour, causing widespread destruction and displacement.
The incident occurred in Red Sea state, one of the areas hardest hit by Sudan’s ongoing civil war. The flooding swept away farms, villages, and homes, leaving thousands without shelter or basic necessities. Local residents described the scene as catastrophic, with cars and entire communities being washed away by the surging waters.
The heavy rains have also exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Sudan. Communications have been disrupted due to damage to a major fiber-optic cable, cutting off many parts of the country from the outside world. The military has been working tirelessly to rescue survivors and provide aid to those affected by the disaster.
The dam collapse comes as Sudan grapples with a multitude of challenges, including a 16-month civil war, widespread displacement, and a looming food crisis. The extreme weather conditions have further compounded these problems, making it even more difficult for humanitarian organizations to reach those in need.
