Moscow Monday, September 9, unveiled a new statue to honor Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s beloved leader and symbol of reconciliation.
The statue is located in a quiet area in the southwestern part of Moscow, representing a growing friendship between Russia and South Africa, as well as other African nations.
The event celebrated Mandela’s significant contributions to human rights and his role in ending colonial rule in Africa. The statue was created by Mikhail Baskakov, a sculptor from the Russian Military-Historical Society, with support from the Moscow Government. It stands at the corner of Michurinsky Prospect and Ramensky Boulevard.
To mark this important occasion, the Russian-African Club at Lomonosov Moscow State University produced a film showcasing Mandela’s life and achievements. The film highlights Mandela not only as a great national leader but also as a global symbol of courage and resilience. It portrays him as a man of justice and kindness, inspiring young people around the world. Mandela is affectionately known as “Madiba,” which means “the beloved one.”
Earlier, in July 2023, Moscow celebrated Mandela’s 105th birthday on July 18 by opening a photo exhibition at the Moscow House of Nationalities. The exhibition featured documentary photographs that captured key moments of Mandela’s life, including his childhood, political activism, imprisonment, presidency of South Africa, and his later years.
The opening ceremonies of both the statue and the photo exhibition were attended by ambassadors and diplomats from African countries, leaders of African communities, Russian government officials, and representatives from various cultural and educational organizations.
