Russell Cook, nicknamed “Hardest Geezer,” has triumphed over adversity to become the first person to run the entire length of Africa.
Cook’s 352-day journey, culminating in Tunisia on Sunday, was a feat of both physical and mental endurance. The 27-year-old from West Sussex, England, embarked on this challenge to overcome past struggles with mental health, gambling, and alcohol. He aimed to raise money for charity and “make a difference.”
Cook’s initial plan – running north from Tunisia to South Africa with no rest days – was derailed by visa troubles in Algeria. Adapting quickly, he reversed course, starting his run at South Africa’s southernmost tip in April 2023. He traversed 16 countries, encountering breathtaking landscapes – cities, rainforests, mountains, and the vast Sahara Desert.
The journey was not without setbacks. An armed robbery in Angola forced Cook to replace stolen equipment and visas. He battled recurring back pain and stomach issues, even needing to take his first rest day after 45 days due to medical concerns.
Undeterred, Cook persevered through the pain, even resorting to stronger painkillers to continue his mission. His biggest hurdle, however, came in the form of another visa issue – this time, re-entering Algeria from Mauritania. Public appeals, including a video viewed by millions, caught the attention of influential figures who helped secure him a visa.
The final stretch – the scorching Sahara Desert with limited resources – demanded night runs to avoid extreme heat and sandstorms. Finally, on April 7th, 2024, Cook laced up for his final marathon, joined by international supporters. He crossed the finish line in Tunisia, greeted by cheers and chants of “geezer.”
Cook’s accomplishment has raised over £700,000 for charity. Celebrations will continue with a performance by British punk band Soft Play, and Cook will finally indulge in his long-awaited reward – a strawberry daiquiri.
